Laudatio Noam Chomsky, uitgesproken door Prof. Jean Paul Van Bendegem, Proximus
Noam Chomsky, geboren op 7 december 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, auteur van een proefschrift, getiteld Transformational Analysis, auteur van een reeks werken over linguïstiek en taalfilosofie, waaronder Syntactic Structures, Aspects of the Theory of Syntax, The Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory, Language and Mind, Rules and Representations, Language and Thought, maar ook auteur van een reeks werken met een politieke inslag, American Power and the New Mandarins, The Culture of Terrorism, Human Rights and American Foreign Policy, Secrets, Lies and Democracy, is op zijn minst een intrigerende en complexe persoonlijkheid.
Het is zeer verleidelijk om het werk van Noam Chomsky in twee, zoniet drie stukken op te delen: het linguïstische en taalfilosofische werk in een eerste periode en het politiek-filosofisch werk in een tweede, latere periode. Maar dit zou zeer ten onrechte zijn. Los van het feit dat het onwaarschijnlijk lijkt dat in één mens twee, zoniet drie zo totaal verschillende denkers aanwezig zouden zijn, is het veel plausibeler om aan te nemen dat taal en politiek met elkaar verweven zijn.
Eén van de gedachten, zoniet de centrale gedachte van het linguïstisch denken van Chomsky is het universele karakter van de taalstructuur: een in wezen identiek regelsysteem is aan ieder van ons meegegeven en bepaalt ons taalvermogen. Men kan dit in eerste instantie interpreteren als een limiterende visie, maar het betekent ook dat in principe elk mens met elk ander mens kan communiceren, uiteraard rekening houdend met de concrete verscheidenheid die het reële spreken aanneemt, maar wel met de zekerheid dat er een vertaalbaarheid moet zijn.
Men zal er mij terecht op wijzen dat, hoe mooi een idee ook moge zijn, indien het niet de toets van het kritisch onderzoek doorstaat, dan moet eraan geschaafd worden. De linguïstische en taalfilosofische opvattingen van Chomsky zijn meer dan uitgebreid onderwerp geweest van kritische commentaren en een belangrijk startpunt geweest voor het ontwikkelen van alternatieven. Zoals men mag en moet verwachten, heeft hij met de volle inzet van de wetenschapper aan deze discussies deelgenomen, zijn standpunt verdedigd en waar nodig zijn theorieën bijgestuurd, getuige het recent verschenen New Horizons in the Study of Language and Mind waarin een toch wel andere Chomsky aan het woord is dan in de vroegere taalkundige werken.
En uiteindelijk draait alles daarrond: een bijdrage leveren, de gedachten provoceren, anderen uitnodigen tot de discussie en, zo nodig, van idee veranderen en een nieuwe bijdrage leveren. Let me repeat this last sentence in English: this is what the scientific enterprise is ultimately all about: to make a contribution, to provoke thoughts and ideas, to invite others to the discussion, and, if required, to change one’s mind and to make a new contribution. The Dutch version of this sentence was meant to capture Chomsky’s scientific attitude, but it expresses equally well his approach to philosophical-political thinking.
If ever a philosopher carried the idea of freedom of speech to its extremes, then it must be Noam Chomsky. In the true spirit of the Enlightenment he would do everything in his power to ensure that everybody can express his or her opinion, even, or rather, especially in the case of opinions which one dislikes oneself. The reason why is actually quite simple: only if you can express your view will we have a basis for a fruitful discussion. Only then will I have the opportunity to try to convince you that you are wrong. And vice versa, of course.
At the same time one should not be naive. Hyde Park Corner is not the embodiment of free speech, but a mere tourist attraction. To guarantee freedom of speech requires an understanding of the societal forces that restrict and/or influence, either negatively or positively, this freedom. However, this is precisely what Chomsky has done in his philosophical-political writings. Whether or not one agrees with his views, whether or not one considers his analyses one-sided, biased, needlessly provocative perhaps, one must admit that they have generated societal discussion, and they still continue to do so. One must also acknowledge that Chomsky introduced challenging concepts that have the power to focus the discussion, such as the concept of the scientific-military-industrial complex. This concept provides a frame of reference and an explanatory tool for situating and understanding specific events that on their own do not seem to carry much significance.
It is therefore most appropriate that this university (in particular) should bestow on Noam Chomsky the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa. Firstly, and most obviously, because of his outstanding qualities as an eminent scholar who has made many seminal contributions to the domain of linguistics and philosophy of language. And secondly, and perhaps even more obviously, for his role as the embodiment of the notion of free research, or vrij onderzoek as it is called in Dutch. Free research not only implies that as an academic one should look beyond the walls and fences of Academia, but also that one has the moral obligation to participate as a citizen-scientist in the public debate. For sure, this is not an easy task, indeed often a very unrewarding one – it is so much easier to make enemies instead of friends. But this cannot be an excuse to go back on and break one’s commitment. If anything, Noam Chomsky is a living example of a fully committed academic and citizen. For this reason, honour him here today.
