Conducting research means using primary and secondary sources. You should always cite your sources. But how do you correctly cite archival materials?
There are many different citation styles. APA, Chicago en MLA are the best known and most frequently used. Each of these style manuals include chapters on citing archival documents and collections. You will find descriptions of each citation style on various websites. We've highlighted a few here:
- Archival Documents and Collections (APA Style);
- About Chicago Manual of Style citation for archival material (Dalhouse University);
- A Guide to Citing Materials from Physical Archives and Collections (MLA Style Center).
The proper attribution of sources entails many details; essential to writing a proper citation of archival materials are the repository (in our case, "Centre for Academic and Secular Humanist Archives (CAVA)") and the call number. This alphanumerical code can be found in CAVA's catalogue under the heading "Call number through application" or "Plaatskenmerk".
Like many other archives, CAVA has an ISDIAH code: 328789. This is the code used by Archiefbank Vlaanderen, among others.
