Movies 10 jaar homohuwelijk and Pioniers van de vrijzinnigheid, submitted by the huisvandeMens Antwerpen
In 2018, organised secular humanism in Belgium could be secure in the knowledge that a number of its sometimes controversial issues had become legal rights. One of those achievements was that Belgium became the second country to allow same-sex marriages in 2013.
With these videos, the huisvandeMens Antwerpen highlights both an acquired right and the history of secular humanist action and organisation.
The gay movement got off to a very difficult start in 1953. A lot of archives were lost because of the taboo that surrounded the movement. That’s why the film is an important document and symbol.
In “Pioniers van de vrijzinnigheid” (“Pioneers of secular humanism”), several secular humanist advocates testify to their commitment and how they tried to change society. The film illustrates an increased appreciation and historical awareness of the secular humanists.
