Posters of activities, submitted by the Studiekring Vrij Onderzoek (VO)
The Studiekring Vrij Onderzoek (VO – “Study Group Free Inquiry”) was founded on 22 November 1949 at a board meeting of the Brussels Studentengenootschap Geen Taal Geen Vrijheid (BSG gtgv – “Brussels Student Association No Language No Freedom”) as a study circle within BSG.
During the period 1967-1969, VO, together with BSG, played an important role in the duplication along linguistic lines of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the establishment of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 1969. The new university incorporated the principle of free inquiry into its organic statute.
The aim of VO is the defence, application and update of the principle of free inquiry, both within and outside the university. VO also sees to it that the VUB observes and propagates this principle. In doing so, the circle does not shy away from any taboos.
The posters in their archives provide a good example of the values VO stands for and the place it occupies in the (collegiate) landscape of the VUB.
