Postcard from a pupil to her Non-Confessional Ethics (NCZ) teacher submitted by the Raad voor Inspectie & Begeleiding niet-confessionele Zedenleer (RIBZ)
In many schools where a non-confessional ethics course is taught, the most deserving pupil has been rewarded with a book voucher for decades. When Mrs Stas (Emmy Vandevelde-Stas) rewarded her pupil Caroline Verbeke with a voucher in the school year 1973-1974, she received a card with a thank-you letter.
The young Caroline had bought a children’s Bible with her voucher and wanted to thank her teacher with a personal reflection on the reading of the biblical stories.
The postcard contained a nice succinct reflection, which was sincerely put down by a student of non-denominational ethics. In doing so, she demonstrated the training she had received in autonomous moral judgment on the basis of free research and scientific method. In this case, the reward was not financial; both the pupil and the teacher derived satisfaction from this small stimulus.
